Things we love: Jeffrey Combs, Frankenstein ripoffs, and ridiculous practical effects, so it seemed like it was time to get down on one knee for the over-the-top BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR (1990)! We had previously done a Patreon bonus about this movie, but it's so fun to watch and discuss, we had to revisit it for the main feed. As May's mom said, "if you can't find a friend, make one."

Another week, another Famke Janssen lead role, this time in Dark Castle's remake of the William Castle/Vincent Price classic HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1999)! This was discussed way back in the Reddit Horror Club days, so Scott decided it was time to bring in into the HMN library, much to Brian's dismay. Sure, the CGI is bad, Chris Kattan is annoying, and it's not nearly as good of a movie as the original, but it's got Jeffy Combs as a psychotic ghost doctor, Geoffrey Rush channeling Vincent Price through John Waters, and some amazingly surreal visuals. Oh, and Marilyn Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams. It's unacceptable that Brian didn't love this film. Unacceptable!
As is tradition here at Horror Movie Night, we're kicking off the new year with a listener poll-chosen, somewhat-non-horror flick, and this time around, we're talking live-action anime rubber suit monster battles with 1991's The Guyver! Don't let the VHS box art fool you - Mark Hamill is NOT the titular character, or even on screen enough to warrant his face on the cover, but this was released at the cusp of the 90s, a time when everyone was trying to squeeze every last drop out of the withering Star Wars franchise. It's actually a selling point that Mark takes backseat to Screaming Mad George's rubber suit/practical effects obsession, and we get 6" kaiju duking it out with no energy weapons in sight (probably not enough budget for post work, oh well). It's been far too long since the 420 Boyz discussed ghost sex, so they went ahead and dove soul-first into 1996's supremely entertaining Peter Jackson outing The Frighteners! When your film stars the Re-Animator, Marty McFly, Gomez Addams, ET's mom and Jake Busey's teeth, and is the reason the LOTR movies get made, you know it's going to be a good time.
